Customer Review: TomTom saved my sanity!
Okay, so I am the woman that is always lost. I have lived in the same area my whole life, but if I get turned around, I am hopeless. I started a new job about a year ago where I would be seeing clients all over Los Angeles County, and I knew I was in trouble. I bought a TomTom, and I can’t express how much of a stress relief it has been! I have driven many many places, and it has only been wrong (slightly, and I quickly figured out the problem) twice. I spent a long time researching which GPS to purchase, and I am definitly happy with TomTom. No more Mapquest when I need to go somewhere, I can just hop in my car, input the address, and off I go! Some of the inputing takes getting use to - i.e. you put the city name first, then the street name, then the number. My only complaint is that you usually have to know if the street is North/South etc. and I forget to ask. You can also download new maps, cool voices, and other features from the website. It has tons of Point of Interests, so I can even go places if I know the name of the venue but not the address. Directions are given with plenty of advance notice, and even includes your next turn so you know which lane to turn into (Turn Right, then Turn Left). TomTom does not tell you the street name to turn onto - only the distance to go, but it has it on the screen. I don’t have a cell phone, so I can’t tell you about the bluetooth, or the internet features, like live traffic, but overall, I love my TomTom!!
Customer Review: TomTom Go510
I purchased the Go 510 because of the great reviews. I was a little dissapointed to find that my home address is not on the GPS map, like many other people this can be frustrating when the maps are not up to date! I have found many places not on the GPS map system, so TomTom get them updated!!! The GO 510 has performed well, I had a few problems of having to reset it several times over the first month of using the unit, but its run great since then and performs well. Other than the map updates it is a good unit. The screen is the right size, the voice for letting you know turns are coming up is great, lot’s of POI to download. Just not updated maps….had to throw that in again. Seriously this is a good unit for the price, but with this unit being discontinued, buy an updated model that you get free map upgrades.

With an effective in-car navigation system at your side, you can say goodbye to the good old days of pulling over and asking directions. But designing an effective system, one that brings together the right mix of speed, accuracy, and simplicity has been a long, hard road for many manufacturers–leading many folks to stick with the human touch of the gas station attendant. The latest in-car GPS units deserve a serious look, though, especially by those who’ve sworn them off as too inaccurate, too complicated, and too expensive. The TomTom
GO 910 embodies much of what’s really great about the next generation of systems, and in many ways it’s successful at making drivers feel as if there’s a helpful guide along for the ride.

Design
The heart of every GPS device is its receiver technology, and the TomTom GO 910 has the best in the business — the highly sensitive SiRF Star 3 GPS chipset, which boasts fast satellite acquisition times, and extreme accuracy, even when you’re driving through dense forests or tall buildings. Also under the hood is a 400 Mhz processor supported by 64 MB of RAM, which gives the GO 910’s interface a zippy feel. An internal 20 GB hard disk is pre-loaded with maps and points of interest (POIs) for the US (including Guam and Puerto Rico), Canada, and Europe. Pre-loaded maps and points of interest are a big plus, allowing you to get going right out of the box. There’s no fussing with memory cards and map uploads from your computer.
Weighing in at 12 ounces and measuring 4.2 x 3.1 x 2.5 inches, the GO 910 is about the size of a softball. TomTom is known for keeping things simple, and that’s the case here; there are no buttons or other doodads on the front of the device — just a big, bright widescreen (480 x 272 pixels) display that’s controlled by touch. There’s also a microphone for hands-free phone calls (more on this later) just above the display. A single button for power is placed on the top of the device, while a single speaker is placed on the bottom. There’s a docking port here, too, which supplies power and data connectivity.
Installation
Installing the GO 910 couldn’t be easier. A rotating suction cup mount attaches to the windshield and the GO 910 clips into it securely. Positioning the mount for easy viewing is a snap, and after some initial setup procedures you’ll be up and running.
The mount accommodates an array of connections, including power, an external GPS antenna, an optional RDS-TMC traffic receiver for FM radio-based traffic updates, audio out, and a microphone connector. In addition to a car power adapter, The GO 910 ships with an external microphone for Bluetooth hands-free calls, as well as a 3.5 mm audio cable for connecting the unit to your car stereo.
While the GO 910 does have an internal rechargeable battery, it should be treated as a backup in most cases. Battery life was relatively short during testing–about 3 hours. The device also ships with a home USB docking cradle, as well as an AC wall charger. Using the included TomTom Home software on your PC, you can upload songs and photos to the GO 910, manage POIs, plan routes, purchase and manage additional TomTom services, and more.
Interface
The GO 910’s easy-to-read display, logical menu and navigation functions, and excellent voice prompts bring the whole hardware and software package together nicely. You’ll feel like you’re using a tool intended for the job, not a piece of software cobbled together to run on generic hardware.
The anti-glare widescreen display offers a clear 3D view of the road and maneuvers ahead. The screen uses a built-in sensor to adjust to changing light conditions. |
The navigation screen is made up of three quadrants: The main map display, which shows a three dimensional view of the road and maneuvers ahead; a distance and turn indicator section, which lets you know how far you have to go until your next turn; and a trip computer with odometer, time, and GPS signal information. The bottom of the display also lets you know the name of the street you’re on.
Pressing on a quadrant brings up one of three additional interfaces. The most important is the main menu, activated by pressing the map quadrant. This brings up a group of big, friendly icons that let you enter a new destination, find alternative routes, plan routes, enter the image gallery and music player, activate mobile phone functions, and check traffic conditions, among other features. Pressing the trip computer quadrant lets you delve deeper into your current route, allowing you to view a simulation of the complete route, text-based directions, and detailed map views of the roads ahead. Lastly, pressing the turn indicator brings up a volume control for voice prompts.
Small plus and minus symbols in the upper corners of the screen allow you to zoom in or out of the 3D map view. While the symbols could be a bit larger and more clear, the design is a tradeoff, as their size means they don’t get in the way of map information. If you have traffic information engaged, whether via wireless data connectivity, or via an RDS-TMC traffic receiver, a small traffic icon appears on the right side of the screen, alerting you of traffic tie-ups ahead. A quick press of the traffic info button in the main menu allows you to find routes with fewer snags.
Voice prompting is clear, concise, and accurate, always delivering directions for the next maneuver at the right time. This is a testament to the accuracy of the GPS hardware; the device knows precisely where you are, giving it the uncanny ability to tell you what you need to know when you need to know it. You can even choose a voice that suits you best, male or female, with UK, US, or Australian accents. It’s a nice touch.
On the Road
Once your home address is entered into the unit and the GPS receiver locks onto a few satellites, you’re ready to roll. Initial satellite acquisition was quick and painless, taking no more than a minute. Entering a destination is fairly straightforward. You can enter an address using an on-screen text entry method, choose a stored or recent destination, pick a point on a map, enter latitude and longitude, or choose a POI that’s stored in memory.
The first trip with the device included a visit to a friend’s house, then a trip to the post office. I entered the friend’s address and off I went. Following the voice prompts yielded an efficient route–the route I would choose on my own–and it incorporated several lesser-known streets and shortcuts. All in all, a great first run. The trip to the post office was less impressive. I searched for the nearest post office using the GO 910’s handy POI search tool and was confident all was well until the device asked me to take a turn I knew was wrong. Eventually, the device delivered me to an abandoned warehouse that, while in the same neighborhood as the post office, was clearly not the right destination. The likely cause is that the GO 910’s POI database has some outdated or inaccurate information. I did test some other POIs and these were accurate, however.
The only other gripe I had about the device was that there is no clear way to end a navigation session. If the unit is still on and you leave a destination, it will continuously try to direct you back to the location, even as you get further and further away from it! The solution to this is to enter a new destination every time you leave an old one, but that’s not how people operate all the time. Of course, you can also simply turn the unit off. But it will go right back to guiding you to your old destination as soon as you fire it up again.
Extras
The GO 910 is designed to tightly integrate with many mobile phones that support the Bluetooth wireless communication standard. Once paired with your phone, you can use the GO 910 as a hands-free unit, with full dialing, speakerphone, and contacts management functionality. When paired with a Nokia E61, the GO 910 was able to fully control all call functions. Because of an incompatibility with the E61, though, it was unable to import the phone’s contact list, making it necessary to set up an independent contacts list on the GO 910.
If you have wireless data service through your cellular carrier, the GO 910 takes full advantage of it with TomTom Plus services. These services, free until the end of 2006, add real-time traffic, weather, and safety camera information. You can also download additional POIs, maps, and voices via the service. Another feature, TomTom Buddies, allows you to see and communicate with your connected friends as they travel. The GO 910 configured a data connection with the E61 effortlessly, and the device was reporting traffic information and weather in seconds. If you have wireless data service and a Bluetooth-capable phone, TomTom Plus is worth a look, even when it becomes subscription-based in 2007.
The GO 910 also features an iPod control interface, which allows you to connect your iPod or iPod Nano (third generation or higher) via an optional cable and control it via the TomTom, while routing audio into your car stereo. As mentioned, there’s also a dedicated MP3 player and image gallery application, features that are just icing on the cake for a device that manages to make GPS navigation accessible, easy, and fun.
Pros
- Tight integration of hardware and software
- Easy-to-use interface with clear, accurate voice prompts
- Excellent Bluetooth support for wireless data and hands-free calling functions
Cons
- Possible inaccuracies in POI database

Customer Review: Disposable?
I got a Tom Tom 910 for Christmas. I used it when I traveled out of town. I really loved it, but I put it away and didn’t use it for a few months because I didn’t go anywhere. When I needed it it wouldn’t start. I reset it. I charged it. I reset it again. Called Tom Tom customer service. They made me reset and recharge and then told me the battery was dead. They said that I could return it for repair, and I asked how much would that cost. Answer - more than a new unit! I asked if I could buy a battery and they said the battery COULD NOT BE CHANGED!!!!!!!! So basically I used it a couple of dozen times and then threw it out. I won’t buy another GPS that has a permanent battery.
Customer Review: T 910

TomTom’s 2008 730 model brings their newest community-based navigation advancements together with thei plug and play ease of use, rock-solid navigation, and sleek designs we’ve come to expect from them.
For a couple of years now, TomTom’s been building a foundation for some powerful community-driven navigation features, and this is the year they really start to harness that power. They began by introducing with Map Share, which lets you instantly modify street names, street direction, and custom locations called points of interest (POIs) on your own device, then upload them to TomTom’s HOME network and download changes made by all of the other users. When you do this, TomTom gets to find out what routes your device has been taking. The data is anonymous, but it’s given TomTom an enormous pile of route and speed data, which they’ve used to tie community data to routing with their new IQ Routes™ feature, which calculates routes using the actual recorded average speeds of travel to calculate your trip rather than posted speed limits, giving you an extremely accurate prediction of how long any given route will actually take at any given time. There are a host of other interesting features, and you can read about them here.
As last year, the difference between the 730 and the 930 models is the “Enhanced Positioning Technology”. The 930 contains some onboard accelerometers and gravity sensors that help it figure out where it’s going even if you lose satellite signal for a few minutes, which can be incredibly useful in cities with a lot of tunnels or “urban canyons” of tall buildings, so if you live in an area where that is an issue, you may want to consider bumping up to the 930. Otherwise, this is a superb navigator that will give you everything you need and expect, and then surprise you a bit.

New – TomTom IQ Routes™
![]() Did You Know? IQ Routes technology gives you a faster route in over 50% of all your journeys. |
We all know traffic is different during a Monday morning rush hour from a lazy Sunday afternoon. And we all want the best shortcuts to bring us to our destination in the fastest way possible. But heavy traffic, speed bumps, traffic lights, rotaries and even pedestrians or shopping crowds can slow you down. That handy shortcut you’re looking for changes depending on the time and day so the shortest route isn’t necessarily going to be the fastest all the time!
As you can see, in this case your route is now about 15 miles longer, but will save you 12 minutes (and a ton of stress!). Now that’s a shortcut! Twelve minutes may not sound much, but it’s over 20% off your journey time. Just consider for a moment how much time that will save you over a whole year… Exactly! And it’s not just urban driving. Whether its roundabouts, crossroads, schoolchildren or just good old-fashioned congestion. Anywhere the traffic flow can vary, IQ Routes can make a real difference. How it works

QuickGPSfix
Starting up can seem like a slow business, particularly if you’re in a hurry, because the GPS receiver needs to know exactly where each GPS satellite is to calculate your location. But satellites only broadcast their positions once every 30 seconds. So if any of their signals are interrupted, for example by passing high buildings, the whole position-fixing process has to repeat itself again and again until the perfect fix is achieved. QuickGPSfix takes a smarter approach.
QuickGPSfix can speed up the time it takes to fix your GPS position by downloading the latest satellite data via an Internet connection. Just connect your TomTom device to your computer and TomTom HOME automatically downloads `QuickGPSfix’ - a special GPS data file that helps your TomTom fix your position quicker, even when the GPS signal is weak or partially blocked.
This unique free service helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever.
On the road or no access to TomTom HOME?
Get the same `QuickGPSfix’ data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection. As soon as a connection is established, the `QuickGPSfix’ data is automatically updated.
Note: QuickGPSfix data has limited validity. So to keep on getting a faster position-fix, re-connect your device at least once a week.
To minimise the amount of data sent over your wireless data connection, this automatic update is only carried out if the data on your device is over 5 days old. The associated data usage of this service is less than 10 Kb per connection. Please contact your mobile service provider to determine the exact costs. To disable this automatic update, just select `Disable Auto QuickGPSfix’ on your TomTom device.

TomTom Traffic

TomTom offers two distinctive ways of providing traffic information, the TomTom PLUS Traffic service and the TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver accessory. | TomTom Traffic Specifics With TomTom Traffic, you can avoid problems and check the road conditions and weather ahead at the same time. TomTom Traffic is delivered via GPRS signal and requires a compatible mobile phone with Bluetooth and a wireless data connection, such as GPRS, UMTS or CDMA, enable you to use PLUS Traffic information on any TomTom device. The advantages of TomTom Traffic are that it delivers information on road and weather conditions, and GPRS signals may be available for areas in which there is no FM radio signal to transmit TMC traffic information (although if there’s no radio, it’s questionable how much traffic there’s going to be). Important notes about TomTom Traffic:
TMC Traffic Specifics The RDS-TMC receiver accessory comes with a 1-year free subscription to the TMC traffic service With some TomTom models, an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver is included in the box. This is indicated by the addition of “T” or “Traffic” to the model name. An example is “GO 930T”. |

Customer Review: Good travel helper asfor me
i am sure TOmTom will upgrade its website to have us all the updated maps as early as 2008..well it doesnt have the MP3 play back option in the unit .. i find many pros while 2 cons.. it doesnt support a SD card slot and its mem is 1gb..however it should have street spelling option instead of calling the turns..well its the price that makes it worth..
Customer Review: Not Impressed!!!
I bought the 730 about 2 1/2 weeks ago. Been using it since. First impression of the tomtom 730 was this gps looks & feel very nice. very well designed but the initial power on language was not english. Pro: -Lane guide -good overall design -fast routing - Con: -preloaded computer voice keep pronoucing “0″ (Zero) to “WEST” -speaker sound like it has blown out when the volume is set higher than 80% -not very accurate (had seen the arrow moving next to the street) -map correction could be better designed -could use a bigger built-in memory (with all the update, it was taking up about 1.9GB out of a total of 2GB)

Customer Review: tom tom good
Item was for my daughter, who was just learning to drive, to enable her to get around town easily. It works great.
Customer Review: Easy to use, but routes are inefficient.
This GPS is extremely user-friendly. Even my 66 year-old father (who was once afraid of catching a computer virus) uses his TomTom with ease. That said, the routes chosen by the TomTom are often the worse possible way to get from where I am, to where I want to go. Mapquest and Google Maps directions are almost always different, and better. If there’s a congested route, it puts me through it. If there’s an obscure rural road running parallel to a highway, it’ll put me on the gravel. If there’s a simple route, I’ll be miles from it. I use it when I’m lost, and in those cases, it will eventually get me to where I want to go. The selection of voices is fun. I enjoy the British gentlelady, Ms. Thatcher, who regularly advises me to “in 350 yards, keep left, and take the motorway” then “go straight on.” But, bloody hell, who thinks of distances in yards? It works, just not well. For the money, however, it’s hard to beat.

Customer Review: GPS works great on my PDA
I love this product. It allows me to us my PDA as a GPS. The only drawback is that it takes a lot of memory, but if you move it to your SD card you will not have a problem.
Customer Review: Brick
I’ve read some of the reviews and they mostly hit the mark. The software is easy to use. The maps are good (up to a point) and the receiver is good at getting a signal. Unfortunately, the company isn’t. The maps are outdated when you buy them. You can’t update the maps without buying everything over again. The software had to be downgraded to work on my Palm T|X - memory overrun issues. I too never heard from Tomtom about my gps antenna issue - the battery swelled and stopped holding any charge. I won’t be using their product again.

Customer Review: TomTom Really New?
The Tom Tom I bought as new was missing seval excessaries. Company said they would send them. I’m still waiting. The Tom Tom made a noise when removed from packaging. Contacted Tom Tom Company, They requested I send it to them. Since one area of the Tom Tom was missing a cover over an area, They indicated that the unit might have been a refurbuished unit and not new.
Customer Review: For those whom say it doesn’t read street names…
I just purchased the tomtom one xl-s (the unit itself only says xl not xl-s, BUT when I power it on, it says xl-s on the opening screen) and was going through a lot of trial and error with it. Some say that it doesn’t say street names; I was having the same problem. I found out that you have to use the ’susan’ “computer” female voice only, not in combination with the ‘human’ voice because if you do that, it will not read the street names. If you use susan all by herself, she reads the street names. The xl unit does not read street names but the xl-s does. Go see the chart on the product page here and it will show you that. I’ve also been going through heck trying to see if this thing “dings” when you’re about to make a turn; for this price, it should have all the bells & whistles!

TomTom is going for the ultimate in portability with the 2008 ONE 130 and ONE 130S by integrating a nifty fold-out mount right into the devices. No more trying to figure out where to stash that big, clunky mount in your car — just pop it off, fold it up and carry the whole thing in your pocket. Of course, the ONE 130 series also features the plug and play ease of use, rock-solid navigation, and sleek designs we’ve come to expect from TomTom.
The ONE 130S adds text-to-speech to the base 130 model. This means instead of hearing “turn right in 50 feet”, you’ll hear, “turn right in 50 feet at Ohio Street”. In our experience, this is probably the most useful step-up feature for a GPS navigator, and if your looking at the 130, we’d definitely recommend stepping up to at least the 130S.

This unique free service - which comes as standard with the GO (920/720/520/910/710/510) and ONE (XL/New Edition) helps you fix your position and get navigating faster than ever.
On the road or no access to TomTom HOME?
Get the same `QuickGPSfix’ data by simply connecting to any TomTom PLUS service, using a wireless data connection (GO 920/720/520/910/710/510 and ONE XL/3RD EDITION and 2nd Edition).
